In the face of the taxi strike, getting around New York City should not be too difficult, even with far fewer cabs on the streets.
The city has put a contingency plan into place. But out-of-towners and other people who are not familiar with our mass transit system may still find themselves stuck.
Getting around the city may be harder than usual for the next 48 hours.
Here's how Mayor Bloomberg's contingency plan works:
The plan allows working cab drivers to pick up multiple fares -- including from the city's airports, where passengers would pay a flat fare of $20 per person from LaGuardia and $30 from JFK.
Group rides within the city would be based on a zone system, starting at $10 for the first zone and $5 for each zone the passenger crosses.
The MTA also has added additional service to and from LaGuardia.
The NYPD said it would have extra police patrols at taxi stands and at other locations to protect cabbies, who aren't on strike, and some undercover cops will drive yellow cabs but won't be picking up passengers.

More Info From The Taxi & Limousine CommissionSome New Yorkers were upset with the cabbie strike.
"Think about it guys. Think about it before you do it, because it may not go over well with the public," one New Yorker told CBS 2 News.
Jeffrey Newton from St. Louis said, "I'm from out of town. I use the cabs to get around the city, so I don't know what I'll do. I guess I'll figure out the subway system."
It's also Fashion Week in New York City, which attracts 100,000 people to Bryant Park and other locations around town. Those who attend Fashion Week are more likely than not to use taxis, so it remains to be seen how it will affect them.
