Teacher Arrested For Teen Affair Gets Jail Time

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ― A onetime Long Island high school teacher has been sentenced to six months in jail after she kept up an affair with a former student despite a court order to stay away from him.

State Supreme Court Judge Joseph Calabrese called Heather Kennedy's conduct ''very serious'' as he sentenced her Friday. The 27-year-old will lose her teaching license and must register as a sex offender.

Kennedy told the judge she was sorry and wanted to move on with her life. She has pleaded guilty to rape and other sex offenses.

The former Wantagh High School math teacher was first arrested in March 2008 on charges of having sex with the 16-year-old in a parking lot. She was instructed to avoid him, but their liaisons continued, and she was rearrested in July.
