Child Victim Critical After Brooklyn Hit And Run

16-Year-Old Suspect Charged As Adult

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― A teenager was arrested in a nearly fatal Brooklyn hit and run that sent a 9-year-old boy to the hospital in critical condition.

Shyquan Burns, 16, was charged as an adult. The accident which occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Reid Avenue and Macon Street in Bed-Stuy.

Witnesses said Burn's white Dodge Charger was speeding down Reid when it struck 9-year-old Akeem Suluki as he crossed near P.S. 262 with the help of a crossing guard.

"She tried to pull him back. She wasn't fast enough and the car hit him," Akeem's sister Shaniqua Harris said. 

His mother, Khadija Suluki, said, "That's my baby. Out of six kids. That's my baby."

Community leaders joined Akeem's family last night at King's County Hospital.

"He's bleeding in the brain. His lung is collapsed. He has a cast from his waist down," Suluki said.

Nevertheless, Akeem is expected to survive.
