The two synagogues targeted in a bombing plot this month will be able to improve their security thanks to federal grants.
Gov. David Paterson announced Sunday the Riverdale Temple and the Riverdale Jewish Center in the Bronx will each receive $25,000 to upgrade their security systems. The funds are coming from a federal program aimed at security for nonprofit organizations.
Paterson also sent a letter to Congress urging that program get more money in fiscal year 2010.
Four men have been accused of plotting to bomb the synagogues and shoot down military airplanes with missiles.
Newburgh resident Lord McWilliams said an FBI informant tricked his brother into being part of a plot to blow up synagogues.
"He wasn't raised to blow up nobody, to hate nobody," McWilliams says. "All he tried to do was help me."
McWilliams, who suffers from a fatal liver condition, said his brother, David Williams, fell into the trap because he wanted to pay for the 20-year-old's surgery.
"He just said, 'don't worry when we go to the doctor, tell them you got the money for a new liver,'" McWilliams said.
Williams' mother said her son didn't have the cash for the dummy bombs the feds said he bought.
She said Williams was driven by money, and that he never talked about wanting to commit jihad or a holy war against Jews.
"He said, 'I met a real Muslim brother who's going to help me with Lord," Elizabeth McWilliams said.
