No more tacky lawn chairs.
For the second time in just weeks, the Times Square pedestrian mall is getting a makeover. The new facelift will make the bustling section of Broadway feel a little more like a park.
Say goodbye to the green plastic and the brown plaid chairs that have replaced cars on Broadway. They will soon be replaced despite the fact that many people enjoy them.
"Where else can you go and sit in a lawn chair in the middle of the street?" Syracuse resident Heather Weeks says. "I think it's awesome."
"They're pretty good, they look like New York," Rafael Andrade, visiting from Brazil, says. "I don't know. It just it fits."
You'll still get to enjoy time square, but come the end of the month, you'll be doing it in different seating. The expanse of dark green metal chairs that are currently between 40th and 42nd will be extended all the way up to 47th Street.
"They're comfortable. They're better than those up the block we tried those a few hours ago," Albany resident Susan Mooney said.
And since they are metal, they won't tear, fray or sag like ones that are currently resting in the pedestrian mall.
Along with chairs, umbrellas have been ordered so revelers can sit in the shade while they enjoy the view.
"It's a nice place to sit and enjoy the crowd on a holiday weekend," Albany resident Tim Mooney says.
More than 400 chairs costing about $40 each should be in place by August.
