On Long Island, the race for Nassau County executive is too close call. Incumbent Democrat Tom Suozzi was expected to win by 10 points but right now with 99 percent of the precincts counted he holds just a 415-point lead over Republican Edward Mangano. In all some 235,000 votes were cast.
Voters struggling with high property taxes and a national recession have spoken. If Suozzi was to earn a third term in Nassau's highest office he would have to emerge from a death struggle with Mangano.
Mangano of Bethpage pledged to reform the county's property tax assessment system -- a popular issue with voters.
Conservative party candidate Steven Hansen of West Hempstead ran on a platform that included his opposition to abortion.
In the race for Nassau district attorney, former prosecutor and Republican Joy Watson was in a cliffhanger with incumbent Kathleen Rice. With 90 percent of the precincts reported, Rice held a 54-46 lead.
The question was how long would incumbents Suozzi and Rice stay even if re-elected? Suozzi may be poised for statewide office, perhaps even a primary run against U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
Rice has been touted here as a good choice for attorney general should Andrew Cuomo run for governor.
