A preview performance of the Broadway revival of "The Royal Family'' was canceled Sunday after one of its stars became ill on stage.
The curtain came down shortly after the Sunday matinee began when actor Tony Roberts fell ill, said show spokesman Aaron Meier.
People who attended the performance said Roberts suddenly developed slurred speech. After the curtain lowered, an announcement was made asking if there was a doctor in the house. A few minutes later, a second announcement notified theatergoers the performance had been canceled.
Roberts, 69, was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Spokesman Jeff Jacomowitz said the actor is in stable condition.
Roberts is known for his roles in Woody Allen movies including "Annie Hall'' and "Hannah and Her Sisters.'' He was last on Broadway in the 2007 musical "Xanadu."
Understudy Anthony Newfeld took over Roberts' role at the Sunday evening performance of "The Royal Family,'' a comedy by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, Meier said.
The Manhattan Theatre Club production opens Thursday at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
