Airport Security Focuses On Remote Control Toys

By Scott Rapoport, CBS 2 News
NEW YORK (CBS) ― The very things your kids love the most could be weapons in the hands of a terrorist. That was the warning Monday from the Transportation Security Administration.

The latest potential terrorist plot against airlines and airports in this country is now centered around ... toys?

"Toys? What are they doing, putting bombs in toys now?" traveler Erin Bryant asked CBS 2 HD

The TSA says it has information from law enforcement that remote control toys could be an instrument of choice for enemies of America looking to strike.

"It appears that terrorists may have an interest to use these remote control toys as a means to initiate devices used in a terrorist attack," TSA administrator Kip Hawley said.

The TSA says the information is not related to any specific threat at this time, but it sure got the attention of local air travelers.

"It's scary to get on planes," one woman said.

Added Adelle Kaplan: "I guess in this day and age anything is possible."

Travelers, including children, are now being told they may encounter additional screenings for remote control devices in their carry-on bags.

"They're gonna screen for whatever they're gonna screen for and that's what we have to live with," Steve Lewan said.

If you are looking for advice, the TSA says pack any such devices in your checked bags to avoid extra delays.

Authorities recently arrested two Florida college students for posting an online video that demonstrated how to use a remote-controlled toy as a detonator.
