Putnam Distributes Anti-Radiation Pills

Potassium Iodide For Those Near Indian Point Nuke Plant

CARMEL, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― Putnam County will be handing out a new batch of Potassium Iodide pills to people living within 10 miles of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plants.

The pills, which treat radiation exposure, were first given to residents in 2002.

But Putnam Deputy Commissioner of Emergency Services Adam Stiebling says the potassium iodide pills have a five-year shelf life.

So people are advised to throw out their old pills and get new ones.

The 10 mile zone around Indian Point covers western Mahopac, all of Putnam Valley, and all of Phillipstown.

Pills will be distributed at the town halls, as well as the county's emergency operations center in Carmel.
