8 Dead In House Fire In Upstate New York
RICHLAND, N.Y. (AP) ―
Fire destroyed a house early Sunday in upstate New York, killing eight people.
Authorities said eight bodies were recovered late Sunday afternoon, adults and children. Oswego County Sheriff Reuel Todd said they appeared to be related, but he declined to disclose their ages or names Sunday. One person escaped the blaze.
Terry Bennett of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office said there were no smoke detectors in the home.
The fire in the town of Richland, 37 miles north of Syracuse, was reported shortly before 3 a.m. by neighbors.
Fire Coordinator John Hines said there wasn't anything immediately considered suspicious about the fire, but the investigation was continuing.
The two-story house was old, and the upper floor collapsed into the first floor and then into the basement, Bennett said.
