Bronx Shooting Victim Shows Signs Of Improvement

15-Year-Old Vada Vasquez Speaks Her First Words Since The Nov. 16 Shooting

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The Bronx high school student caught in gun crossfire is showing signs of improvement.

15-year-old Vada Vasquez spoke her first words since the shooting on November 16. Vasquez was shot in the head while walking home from the Bronx Latin School.

A hospital official says Vasquez spoke her mother's name and is now recognizing people.

Carvette Gentles has been charged with attempted murder, along with four other young men -- Rohan Francis, Dwayne Taylor, Cleve Smith, and his brother Clivie Smith -- who range in age from 18 to 23.

Police believe the other victim, 19-year-old Tyrone Creighton, was the intended target.

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the defendants made sure the gun was in the hands of the only one without an arrest record.

"The five individuals confronted Tyrone Creighton in front of a bodega, handing off a gun from one to the other. We believe, to get the weapon to the shooter," Kelly said.

Kelly believes the defendants, all members of the bloods gang, were acting on an order from an inmate at Rikers Island who had a run in with Creighton's brothers inside.

An act of retaliation with an innocent and unintended victim.
