Water Restored After Main Break In West Village
Cleanup May Take Weeks

NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Water service is now restored in the West Village after a massive water main break forced residents from their homes and business owners from their stores.
West 10th Street remains closed between West 4th and Bleecker Streets as crews repair a 20-inch main broke around on 11 p.m. Saturday. Many took to hopping in plastic garbage bags to stay dry.
The break forced authorities to evacuate 14 buildings. The rupture released thousands of gallons of water and the cleanup continues.
"We're not affected but all our water was coming up brown. We had to close," said a local restaurant owner.
With numerous basements flooded building structures became a concern for the Department of Buildings. Fearing the foundations of old buildings were comprimised by the water, more than one hundred people were evacuated from their homes and left searching for a dry place to stay.
"My husband's trying to call friends, relatives and neighbors or hotels at this point we really don't know what we're doing," said resident Lindsey Chester.
It could take several weeks before all the damage is repaired.
