CBS 2 HD Consumer Watch: Lucrative Weekend Jobs
Supplement Your Income, Start Putting Away Cash For Rainy Day By Going That Extra Mile During Your Days Off
MELVILLE, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Do you need some extra cash? A weekend side business can help you earn big bucks.
"I am a home improvement buff. I am an armchair decorator," Debra Cohen said.
"It started out because have a love for wrist watches," Marc Frankel said.
Cohen, a stay-at-home mom, and Frankel, a mechanical engineer, put in long hours at their regular gigs and both have second jobs they love -- Cohen as a home contractor referral service, Frankel as an online watch seller.
"It started with one brand, one watch, only on eBay and it just snowballed and took over from there," Frankel said.
"We will refer everyone from a handyman to plumber painter to general contractor electrician," Cohen said.
Whether you just need cash or want to be your own boss starting a low-cost business is easier than you might think.
"There's one guy who is actually teaching young children how to ride a bike and charging $75 an hour," said Michelle Anton, author of "Weekend Entrepreneur."
Anton said the recession is a great time to create your own company.
"Number one, some of the biggest companies today started during the Depression and number two, we really have to look for other ways and other options when it comes to earning money," Anton said.
"We've paid for vacation, we've paid for college," Cohen said.
Cohen's business is so successful, she's taught 400 other stay-at-homers how to replicate it all across the country, charging them for her consultations. Both Frankel and Cohen believe they're successful because they love what they do.
Another booming business, gift baskets turning a hobby into a business for the creative person to design for the mom to be to Christmas day, entrepreneurial experts say this business is booming.
More options? Handyman...a personal chef...an event planner...or eBay trader. And aging baby boomers need non medical home care assistants.
Other lucrative weekend options include a cleaning business or a home and office organizer. For more ideas, click
