Traffic is finally moving on the West Side Highway after a nasty head on crash backed up traffic for miles in the heart of rush hour.
Chopper 2 HD was over the scene minutes after a car jumped the guard rail and sailed into the path of oncoming traffic.
For drivers traveling southbound on the West Side Highway near 120th Street, what happened at around 7 a.m. Tuesday is always a concern, an out-of-control vehicle that flipped the guardrail from the opposite lanes.
"I'm always careful because I've seen a lot of terrible accidents happen over here," said New Jersey commuter David Ukbolo.
Police say a male driver was speeding northbound when he lost control of his car.
The dark colored sedan jumped the metal rail, and because the northbound lanes are elevated, flew down the grass shoulder. It then struck an oncoming vehicle in the southbound lanes driven by a 35-year-old female off-duty police officer who was headed into work.
A total of three people were taken to St. Luke's Hospital with injuries. But miraculously, none of them are serious.
The effects of the early morning crash were being felt hours later, as roads were slow going at best.
"I've been stuck in this traffic for about an hour now," added Ukbolo.
"My experience is when it's bad on the highway, it's going to be bad on Riverside Drive too. You don't gain much," said Connecticut resident Dave Schneider.
Traffic was either stopped or slow going from Hamilton Heights to the George Washington Bridge.
