CBS 2 News has learned a white powder that was found inside an envelope at Senator Chuck Schumer's midtown office is apparently a hoax.
Sources say a staffer in Schumer's office, located at 757 3rd Avenue near 47th Street, opened up an envelope and discovered the substance about 5 p.m. Emergency units arrived at the scene and decontaminated that staffer as well as several other employees.
Officials later determined the substance is non-hazardous, an apparent hoax similar to a scare that occurred at former President Bill Clinton's office last Friday. The strikingly similar scare prompted the evacuation of Clinton's Harlem office. In that incident, a staff member opened a letter addressed to Clinton and white powder fell out. The secret service says the envelope also included a letter with anti-government ranting.
The white powder in last week's incident turned out to be something similar to flour.
A spokesperson for Schumer released a statement late tonight saying: "The authorities respondedly promptly and professionally. A preliminary test indicates that there are no chemical hazards. Everyone in our office is fine."
Several fire engines and ambulances were called to the scene, however there are no reported injuries or hospitalizations.
