NEW YORK (CBS) ― Wind gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour did some damage around the tri-state Monday night and it wasn't much better Tuesday.

It was raining glass during the evening rush when the window of a new office building at the New York Times Tower cracked, sending shards down to the street below. One person was hurt.

At 6th Ave. and 55th St., loose debris from a nearby rooftop went flying. In this case, no one was injured.

Uptown in Harlem at 115th St., construction scaffolding hovering over the sidewalks collapsed, fortunately missing the people below.

Scaffolding in Astoria couldn't compete with the fierce gusts, also collapsing under sheer pressure.

In Elmhurst, it was a building facade that gave way, crushing a van parked nearby.

And finally in Passaic, New Jersey, one man was hurt when he stepped out to check on his car. A large tree came crashing down and neighbors had to pull him to safety.

According to the landlord of the injured man, he was hospitalized and hopes to be home Tuesday.

Wind gusts Monday peaked at 52 mph in Belmar, N.J., while winds at John F. Kennedy Airport reached 46 mph.

The windy weather could make for a tough commute in, so hold onto your steering wheel this morning, and if you are heading out of town, call ahead as there were some reported flight delays at area airports.

LaGuardia Airport was experiencing delays of nearly 90 minutes, while delays at Newark are holding passengers for up to an hour. Both airports reported wind gusts peaking at 45 mph.
