Deep Freeze For Tri-State Area
Below Freezing Temperatures, Gusting Winds Arrive
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
It was a wild Sunday for the tri-state area, packed with dangerous, windy weather. Snow was blowing sideways, winds were gusting, and temperatures dropped down into the teens.
The passage of a strong cold front caused an arctic air mass to spread over the tri-state area Sunday night. The combination of westerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 to 50 mph with temperatures dropping into the teens resulted in wind chill values ranging from zero to five below.
In the Midwood section of Brooklyn, a twisted heap of metal was all that was left of a multi-story scaffold. It flew off a building and buried at least 5 cars on East 12th Street. One resident heard creaking, saw shaking, and guessed correctly that a big crash was moments away.
"I told my brother that thing is coming down in a matter of seconds and my brother said it came down and there was a crash and it hit the wires," said Abba Florans. "It was a chain effect."
Utility poles were pushed out of place, with one catching fire. There were no reported injuries, but many were left without power.
Across the region people were caught off guard by topsy-turvy temperatures. Few expected to trudge through a snowstorm after the mild temperatures just a few days ago.
Snowflakes were flying on the whipping winds, feeling like a slap in the face to Tom Novak.
"It's tremendous, we went to Whole Foods about an hour ago and there was nothing, and now there's [a snowstorm]," Novak told CBS 2 HD.
Drivers did not have it any easier. There are widespread delays almost everywhere. A downed tree brought traffic to a dead stop on the Henry Hudson Parkway at the Broadway exit.
