Storm Watch: Dangerous Driving Conditions

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBS) ― The roads are still a mess, especially in Clifton, New Jersey where an off ramp from route 3 to route 21 is closed down, after a serious accident around 1 a.m. Saturday.

According to police, the driver hit a patch of ice and then slammed into a police. He was taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

This is not the only area that has caused a serious accident in new jersey.

Chaos on the highway when wet pavement becomes an ice rink at the Wanaque Bridge in Passaic County. The northbound side of I-287 got the worst of it, with at least 15 accidents, one right after the other.

"Coming in the right-hand lane going slow, car was there I moved over a little bit, and boom smashed into somebody else, cause somebody else was there, car ended up on the guardrail there, and I'm thanking god, that I'm all right," said crash victim Caramel Herron.

CBS 2's Lou Young was there as there as a fleet of tow trucks arrived to remove the smashed up vehicles from the highway. The lineup of crashes stretched as far as the eye could see.

"Up this way we see trucks that rear-ended each other, we see a tow truck that rear ended a fire truck responded to some initial wrecks. Over here there's a women who went right into the side guardrail over this way," Young said.

"it just took two seconds to happen, everything, so I was just scared and I was in my car, I haven't checked anything yet," said Chitra Dass, another crash victim.

"It's a mess, the whole road is a sheet of ice, we can't even stand it," a driver said.

Snow continues to fall Saturday morning. If you do plan to head out, beware of the roadways. They may not look slick but it's that black ice you need to be aware of. Give yourself time, take it slow and leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you.
