What Do The Fans Think Of Joe Torre?
May Be Fired After Yankees Lose In Playoffs
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
After 12 playoff appearances in 12 seasons, Joe Torre may have managed his final game for the Yankees when they were knocked out of the playoffs Monday night. "The 12 years just felt like they were ten minutes long, to be honest with you," Torre said. The boss said he probably wouldn't bring Torre back unless New York rallied to win the best-of-five series and that clearly didn't happen. The Yanks were eliminated once again in the first round for the third straight year, despite a $215 million dollar payroll. "This has been a great 12 years, whatever the hell happens from here. I'll look back on these 12 years with great, great pleasure based on the fact that I am the kid who had never been to the World Series other than to see my brother play in the 50s, to have been to six world series and going to post season I can tell you one thing: it never gets old," Torre said. With owner George Steinbrenner in attendance, a cheering crowd chanted "Joe Torre, Joe Torre" as the 67-year-old manager, who earns $7.5 million in the final season of his contract, went to the mound twice in the eighth inning. "These fans are very special. You can feel their heartbeat," Torre said. Not all fans think Torre should be around for a 13th season, however. "I think he should be fired," one young fan said. "What are you going to do? Are we going to keep going with this guy and lose? I want to win. Yankees are winners," another fan said.A group of Joe fans disagreed: "Joe stays, 100 percent, Joe stays!" they yelled.
