Police Investigate Laundromat Death As Homicide

CBS 2HD's Josh Landis contributed to this report.
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBS) ― The death of a woman found by a co-worker in a Yonkers Laundromat has been ruled a homicide.

Roberta Galicia-Lagos was a fixture at the Yonkers laundromat on 260 Hawthorne Ave. But the 25-year-old didn't survive a violent encounter on Monday morning. Her partially-clothed body was found face-down on the floor of the laundromat's bathroom, which customers say is normally locked.

Galicia-Lagos was apparently cleaning the Laundromat as she does every morning when police say an attacker entered and killed her.

Police have not released any details of the murder or whether anyone has been questioned. Sources however told CBS 2HD that she was strangled.
The woman had rented a room and lived with a family a block from the laundry where she worked but had moved out recently to live with her boyfriend.
Customers and others who saw her on a daily basis were shocked to hear of her death.

"She was a very good girl. She was working hard to, you know, survive," said local businessman Emil Maha. "It is a tragedy. I mean it's a tragedy for everybody.".
Laundry owner Joe LaSalle says Lagos opened in the mornings.
The woman also worked at a fast-food restaurant in Yonkers, about 15 miles north of midtown Manhattan.
Galicia-Lagos held another part-time job at a nearby McDonalds, where a co-worker described her as a good addition to the staff.

John Catala, a regular at the laundromat said he spoke to Galicia-Lagos often and there were no signs of trouble.

"It feels kind of weird that she's not here," Catala told CBS 2. "People that come into the laundromat, we're always asking her, 'How's your family?' and so on, and it seems that everything was doing fine. She never looked distressed or abused or anything like that."

Police are using bloodhounds to search for clues and are questioning people in the neighborhood, looking for someone or something that will help them find the person who took the woman's young life.
Police are trying to find witnesses who were near the laundry between 5:30 and 9 Monday morning.
