CBS microphones picked up the exchange during its live broadcast of the match. Tournament spokesman Chris Widmaier says Federer is being docked the same amount as two other players -- Vera Zvonareva and Daniel Koellerer -- for audible obscenity.

Two points from victory against inexperienced, unheralded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, two points from a sixth consecutive title at Flushing Meadows and a record-extending 16th Grand Slam title overall, Federer, quite simply, fell apart Monday.

Tennis fans from all over the world have strong and opposing reactions to Williams' meltdown Saturday. While some are ready to forgive and forget, others aren't sure they're ready to give the American sensation a second chance.

The 18-month-old is too young to remember her mother's unforgettable run at the U.S. Open. Clijsters came into her third tournament after 2 1/2 years of retirement just hoping to ease herself back into the experience of competing at a Grand Slam.

The fine -- not quite 3 percent of the $350,000 in prize money Williams earned by reaching the semifinals -- is the maximum on-site penalty that can be issued for unsportsmanlike conduct at a Grand Slam tournament.

The world's top-ranked player punctuated the victory Sunday with a winner, hit backward between his legs, to set up match point. The top-seeded Federer won his 40th straight match at Flushing Meadows and will try to become the first player to win six straight titles at America's Grand Slam since Bill Tilden in the 1920s.

Williams lost to unseeded, unranked Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 in a taut semifinal that featured plenty of powerful groundstrokes by both women. No one will remember a single shot that was struck, though, because of the unusual, dramatic way it finished.

About half an hour later, he was still looking for some action. The third-seeded Nadal took advantage of an embarrassing collapse by No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez at the U.S. Open on Saturday to put away his quarterfinal, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-0. "I can't tell you, because I don't have the answer," Gonzalez said when asked to explain his quick disintegration.

Yep, it was still pouring. And he, like everyone else, was still waiting. Rain threw the U.S. Open into disarray for the second consecutive year, meaning both singles finals will be pushed back again, and the tournament will end Monday at the earliest.

By early Thursday evening, he knew he'd get that opportunity at the U.S. Open, thanks to a wind-swept 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over 16th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia.
