Titanic Exhibit Set To Open At Denver Museum
DENVER (CBS) ―
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science provided the media a sneak peek Tuesday at the Titanic exhibit set to open there on Friday. 'Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition' is in Denver until January 6, 2008.
The exhibit contains recreations of parts of the ship, stories of the survivors, including Denver's own Molly Brown, and thousands of artifacts from the ship itself.
"When you come to the exhibition, I think the most surprising thing is how emotionally you're going to connect to Titanic," said Cheryl Mure of the Titanic exhibit. "You're going to see real objects that hold history and tell stories like nothing you've ever seen before. They have so many memories of not only the passengers themselves by of the ship itself."
The exhibit director said there is some debate about whether to recover any parts of the wreckage from the ocean floor.
"There is a controversy as to whether the whole thing should be left as it is on the ocean floor resting or whether it should be preserved because things on the ocean floor won't stay that way for ever," said Jodi Schoemer, the exhibit director. "Is it better to preserve the history and bring it up, that's the jist of the controversy."
A piece of the Titanic was moved into place June 4 for the exhibit. The 3,000 pound piece of the ship's hull was hoisted up in a room at the museum.
The piece of the hull that's at the DMNS comes from a debris field and was not cut from the main part of the ship.
