Residents in a small Cape Cod neighborhood were startled Sunday when a 3-foot alligator was found under a car.
Natural resource officers in Hyannis, Mass., were called in and they eventually snagged the gator. It's being held overnight until its owner is found, reports CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
It's illegal to have a pet alligator. Under the Exotic Species Act, anyone with an alligator can face criminal charges.
Officials say sometimes people take on the animals as pets, but when they get too large, they release them.
The gator is estimated to weigh 50 to 60 pounds.
The alligator may be taken to the New England Reptile Raptor Exhibit in Taunton, Mass., which has an animal rehab facility.
