Brazen Robber Robs Armored Car Of $330,000 In NYC

Witnesses Tell CBS 2 HD The Man, Armed Only With A Knife, Struck In Broad Daylight, Overwhelming Guard

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Police are searching for the man who robbed an armored truck of $330,000 on a busy New York City street in broad daylight on Tuesday morning.

A normal, common delivery of money to an M&T Bank was violently disrupted when a man, armed with a knife, attacked the guard delivering the cash.

"[It happened at] 9:35 in the morning," witness Darryl Anderson said. "Who thinks a robbery or something is going on?"

First Avenue was busy, but not even the daylight deterred this robber, who was captured in a black and white photo.

Police say the guard went into the vestibule of the bank and noticed a man in a gray hooded sweat shirt near an automated teller machine. As she went to the bank entrance he pounced from behind, put his arm around her chest and grabbed her handgun.

The guard dropped a nylon bag with the cash inside. The man grabbed the bag, threw the gun in it and ran away. The guard ran into the bank and called police.

"Very easy...very fast," East Side Café owner Spiro Mouzakitis said, describing how quickly the robber overwhelmed the guard.

The armoed car company, Hunt Valley, Md.-based Dunbar, hasn't returned a telephone call seeking comment.
