EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBS) ―
It was a frightening ordeal for a 6-year-old boy on Long Island on Monday. The child wandered out of school and ended up on a major area highway.
The little boy left the school intending to go home and was found wandering in the rain on the service road leading to the Sunrise Highway. Needless to say there were some scary moments for the little boy and his mother, who is furious something like this could happen.
CBS 2 HD had a chance to meet 6-year-old Daniel Stevenson on Monday night. He was dropped off at Medford Elementary School a little late Monday morning by his mother. She signed him in at the main office, but apparently school officials allowed him to go to his kindergarten class by himself.
What they didn't realize was the class was at a school assembly. When Daniel showed up he was alarmed by the empty classroom and decided to call it a day and go home.
Daniel left the school and wandered out on the highway. His mother, Jacqueline Stevenson, said she's shocked there wasn't any supervision.
"It could have been a really bad situation," Jacqueline said. "It really could have. He walked right out of the school.
When asked if school officials knew Daniel had left, his mother said they had no idea until the police showed up at the school.
Jacqueline Stevenson found out about the incident when the police showed up at her door with Daniel in tow.
"I walked him in to the school myself," she said. "When I spoke to the principal, she said she would make sure that that never happened again. (It was) a really poor oversight, a really poor oversight. I'm grateful he's okay. It could have been really, really bad, and I'm just grateful to the people who stopped.
"I just want it to never happen to any child ever again."
The heroes of this story, two women who saw Daniel sitting on the side of the road crying, are really unknown to Jacqueline Stevenson. She would really like to know who they are so she can thank them in person.
