A Massachusetts family has quite a fish tale to tell. They went out for
a day of tuna fishing off Scituate Thursday, and ended up back on the
docks with a 624-pound shark.
The family of four was working to land a bluefin tuna aboard the charter fishing boat "The Grace". About 45 minutes into the fight, the fish surfaced near the boat but it wasn't alone, reports CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
"Tuna popped up and there was a mako shark right behind him eating his tail off," said Captain Taylor Sears of Scituate.
"The shark decided he wanted the fish more than we did. So we decided we're gonna get it back from the shark," said Bob Mayo, who was on the trip with his wife Pamela and children Ian and Elizabeth.
It was the chance that Sears had been waiting for. He'd never landed a mako before Thursday, and went to work. "We got a shark leader ready on one the rods and pitched the bait out to him and he ate it. Hour and half later
we got him. Now he's hanging behind us," Sears said gesturing to the dock where the huge fish hung on a scale.
Sears had an experienced pro by his side for the battle.
Captain Tom King has caught about 30 mako over the years. "There's makos go over 1,000 pounds, but this is a male mako. It's the largest male mako that I know of," King said.
Word got out about the impressive catch before the fishing boat returned to the dock. A large crowd had gathered to watch the weigh in.
As for what happens to the shark now? "We're gonna eat it," young Ian Mayo declared. He's hoping to save some of the shark's teeth, and have his father mount the head.
"Hopefully we can find the hook inside of him, but I doubt it."
