As chairwoman and president of a special session of the United Nations Security Council, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton led a voting session to support women, peace and security.
At the end of her comments Wednesday, Clinton joked that she liked being president and may stay to do this job a little longer.
"I resume now my function as President of the council," Clinton said. "I kind of like
being president so this might go on a little longer than anticipated."
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon then said "Thank you, Madam President."
The council then erupted in laughter and applause.
The council, however, was meeting for a serious matter. Secretary Clinton has committed to making women's issues a "centerpiece" of her work as the Obama administration's chief diplomat.
The U.S.-sponsored resolution seeks to expand and strengthen a measure approved last year, which condemns the use of rape in conflict and characterizes it as a threat to peace and security.
Clinton was moved to seek additional action against the growing use of rape as a result of her visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in August. She met with some of the estimated 200,000 victims of sexual violence in the country's war-torn eastern region.
