Poll: Jon Stewart Most Trusted Newsman In America
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The late Walter Cronkite was once dubbed the "Most Trusted Man in America," in his role as anchor for CBS News throughout much his career that spanned decades.
After his death last week, TIME magazine's website ran a poll to see who the most trusted newsman in America is now and after the votes were tallied, the winner was
Jon Stewart, CBS station WFOR-TV reports.
44 percent of those viewers who responded to the poll picked Stewart as the most trusted newsman. Brian Williams of NBC News came in second with 29 percent of the vote, followed by ABC News' Charlie Gibson with 19 percent of the vote, and Katie Couric rounded out the list with 7 percent of the vote.
According to the poll, Stewart tied with Williams for the title of most trusted newsman across the state of Florida.
Stewart hosts "The Daily Show" Monday through Thursday on Comedy Central and has made waves during 2009 for going head-to-head with Jim Cramer of CNBC over the network's claim to "In Jim We Trust." Stewart pulled clips showing Cramer giving investment advice to stay with Bear Stearns among others right before the bottom fell out of Wall Street.
While "The Daily Show," is meant to be tongue-in-cheek for the most part, Stewart has shown interviewing skills that helps bring in guests including Senators, Representatives, foreign dignitaries, authors and Hollywood stars.
