Secret Santa Gives Gold Coins To Salvation Army

DENVER (CBS) ― Every holiday season it seems the Salvation Army has a story to tell about one very valuable coin dropped in a red kettle. This year, the charity is counting multiple blessings.


For years, a valuable coin or two has shown up in Colorado, so no one was surprised when somebody dropped a $20 Liberty gold piece in a kettle in Denver.

"Then the next day, then another coin, then the third day another coin," Major Neal Hogan with the Salvation Army told CBS station KCNC-TV.

But the generous numismatist didn't stop there.

"And finally, all totaled, six different gold American pieces have been donated anonymously," Hogan said.

The six $20 coins are certain to be worth much more.

"They will be a bottom figure of $700 up to several thousand dollars apiece," Hogan said.

It's a great boost to a charity that has seen expenses rise along with need. Giving anonymously means giving without receiving, not even a tax deduction.

"A lot of gifts come in various forms and they are all very helpful, but this one says something extra about the Christmas spirit," Hogan said.

It's alive and well and good as gold.
