N.J. Selling Lotto Tix With Zero Chance Of Reward
NEWARK (CBS) ―
The odds of winning the lottery are long, but would you buy a ticket if you knew the odds of winning the big prize were zero? Well, that's the case in New Jersey.
The 'Million Dollar Explosion' lottery claims you can win $1 million, but they have awarded all of the top 6 winning tickets. They are still selling the remaining tickets until July 21.
"They should definitely be taken off of the market it's not fair," said Mar DeGaeta of Hoboken.
The $20 scratch off ticket still has two $10,000 winning tickets unclaimed.
"That's the lottery for ya
they make money, on top of money, on top of money. It's ridiculous," said Vinny Cicca of Rockaway.
"I think it's corrupt. I think the lottery system is corrupt, money that is allocated for schools is being pushed off to other places," said Prasanph Nair of Manhattan.
Bhamini Shah, who sells lottery tickets for Davis Stationary in Hoboken, sees nothing wrong with the policy as long as there are some second tier prizes available.
"A million dollars is sold out but people still have a chance at 2nd and 3rd prize. I think it's fair," said Shah.
A spokesman for the N.J. State Lottery said that consumers can log onto www.njlottery.net to determine how many winning tickets are available for each of the instant game tickets.
New Jersey is not alone in the practice of selling lottery tickets even after the top prize is gone. Florida and Michigan are guilty of the same thing. However, New York State policy is to pull all tickets once the top prizes have been claimed.
