Man Robs Disabled Woman, Makes Strange Request
FORT WORTH, Texas (CBS) ―
It was bad enough that a disabled North Texas woman had to make a trip to the doctor's office; then the appointment was delayed by a knife wielding robber. The robber not only stole her cash, but had a strange request, reports CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas.
Karla Berry can't do much to protect herself. She is disabled because of back problems and for the last seven years has walked with a cane. Unfortunately, her physical issues made her an easy target for a thief. "I was scared to death," Berry said of the incident.
Everything started when Berry left her east Fort Worth apartment last Monday morning. The 46-year-old, who has been battling a serious colon illness for nearly two years, was about to get in her car and drive to a doctor's appointment for treatment. That's when Berry says the robber came running right at her and demanded all of her money.
Berry said, "I gave him everything in my pocket," but that wasn't enough for the robber. "He said 'I need you to take me somewhere' and I said 'look please I don't want any trouble'," Berry recalled.
Of all places, Berry said the man wanted a ride to the Fort Worth public library on Bridge Street. "I get in the car and I am just shaking the whole time I'm in the car with him." Berry said the robber held the knife to her arm during the entire trip.
As Berry drove, she said a number of things were running through her head. "Actually, I was just saying a little prayer under my voice and thinking if I can just get rid of this jerk and then the next thing -- I just have to get to my appointment."
Another man was standing on the corner, waiting for the robber, when Berry pulled up at the library. Berry said in a matter of seconds the robber "gets out of my car and leaves the door open, and I just shut the door and take off."
Berry said both men ran into the Woodbridge Apartments across the street from the library.
Berry kept driving until she got to her doctor's office and called police from there. While she made it to her appointment, Berry says the ordeal has taken a toll on her. "I can't really eat well," she said. "If I do, I get sick."
Still Berry tries to keep a positive attitude and says the next time someone tries to take advantage of her; she'll have a can of pepper spray waiting for them. "Now I keep it, keep it shook up and ready!" she said.
