Filene's 'Running Of The Brides' Extra-Wild In '09

Hundreds of women were on line for hours in anticipation of the annual Running of the Brides at Filene's in Union Square.

It's turned into an annual event: the Running of the Brides at Filene's Basement, where engaged women go on a frenzied search for deeply-discounted wedding gowns.
It's an event that has even more meaning this year with the country deep in a recession.
Brides to be and their teams of helpers were up bright and early for the big event, which officially kicked off at 8 a.m.
Blame it on the recession, but this year's melee was more rough and tumble than past years. As hundreds of hopeful brides made the truly mad dash for low-cost wedding gowns, a 67-year-old woman slipped and fell. Her injuries were said to be minor, fortunately, but brides say the discounts here were major.
Some of these dresses retail for $10,000, though today some were found under $700. One bride-to-be from South Jersey was in an actual tug-of-war over what could be her dream wedding gown.
And the people who run the annual event at Filene's Basements across the country say as the economy takes a nose dive, so do people's manners as everyone desperately tries to save a buck.
"The lines are longer. We've been selling more dresses. Everyone looking for a discount because if they save money here they can splurge someone else," says Pat Boudrot, a spokewoman for Filene's.
Some brides-to-be and their helpers scooped up more than 20 gowns at a time, trying them on slowly but surely.
It was overwhelming for some of the men on hand.
"It's the craziest thing I have ever seen. It's a lot of fun," says Steven Wells, whose daughter was searching for her dress.
Fun? The actual wedding day will be a cakewalk compared to all the chaos and craziness.
