Contest-Winners Wed Atop Empire State Building

CBS 2's John Metaxas
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Thirteen couples took their love to new heights on Valentine's Day after winning a nationwide contest.

They said "I do" atop New York City's most celebrated skyscraper.

Love was in the air in Manhattan, literally, from the ball at Times Square – which was lit up in hot pink for the holiday – to the Empire State Building. Those thirteen couples won the opportunity to exchange their vows and get married atop the city.

Juanita Garcia and Christopher Kerber met in the army, where they are both sergeants. They'd planned to wed in April in their hometown of Washington, D.C., but couldn't pass up Valentine's Day in New York.

"I'm married," Chris said just after the ceremony. "I'm nervous."

"It's exciting – I'm very happy," the new Mrs. Kerber said. "It's one of the best memories I've had in my life."

After the ceremony, it was up to the 86th floor and a view the young couple won't soon forget.

"Everybody inside is a bit gooey," tourist Mark Harmon said. "It's really nice."

From now on, the Kerbers will celebrate Valentine's Day and their anniversary on the same day.

The thirteen couples who got married at the Empire State Building Saturday were selected from more than 400 entries in a nationwide contest.

Valentine's Day is the only time the skyscraper opens its doors for weddings.
