A dog was found alive and in relatively good shape after spending eight days trapped in the rubble of a building that exploded, critically injuring the pup's owner.

Lulu, a Springer spaniel, was rescued Sunday after the owner of the business that was housed in the two-story building heard her whimpering.

Lulu belongs to Brian Mislanski, who was critically injured in the April 19 explosion and remained at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver on Tuesday. He declined to comment on the dog's rescue except to say, "I'm happy."

Veterinarian Christine Murphy said Lulu suffered mild dehydration and had some trauma to her left eye. The dog probably survived by drinking melting snow and eating food she found in the debris, Murphy said.

The building housed Good Times Adventures, a snowmobiling and dogsledding business.

Mislanski, a van driver for the business, was house-sitting for the managers who lived in the building's upstairs apartment. He had been buried up to his chest in debris and it took about four hours to free him, the fire department said.

The cause of the explosion was not known. Breckenridge fire officials did not immediately return a call Tuesday seeking further detail on the investigation.
