Golfer Tracks Down Stolen Golf Clubs Online
ELK GROVE, Calif. (CBS) ―
A golfer was roaming Craigslist on the internet, and found his own stolen clubs for sale. He arranged to meet the suspect at an Elk Grove, Calif. golf course to take a closer look at the clubs, and ended up bagging the suspect in a creative way.
Less than three hours after Maynard De La Cruz's clubs were stolen, they were for sale. A post on the website Craigslist.org described Maynard's clubs very closely, asking for a price that was a mere fraction of what he paid for them.
Acting as though he was interested in buying the clubs, he arranged to set up a meeting with the seller at the Emerald Lakes Golf Course.
"The victim immediately recognized the golf clubs as his property, got on the cell phone and called our officers," said Chris Trimm of the Elk Grove Police Department. "Our officers swooped in and arrested the bad guy."
Now the suspect, Bryan Sughrue, is under arrest for possession of stolen property and violating probation.
"In this case the gentleman did all the right things, he contacted the police department," said Trimm.
And Maynard says he would do it again. Ask any golfer: Don't mess with the clubs.
