NEW YORK (CBS) ― It's the video that's making waves on the Internet and frightening just about every commuter who sees it – a female gang beating a man on the subway.

But is it real?

According to The Smoking Gun Web site, the YouTube video was posted by 17-year-old Harlem filmmaker Kadejra Holmes. After doing the interview, Holmes pulled the video, the site said.

However, The Smoking Gun got a copy and posted it for all to see.

The 4-minute, 18-second film shows some foul-mouthed teenage girls taunting as male straphanger on an "A" train. The man can be heard telling them, "Why are you arguing? Stop. Stop."

Then, as the train pulls into the Broadway Junction station in Brooklyn, a girl can be heard off-camera saying, "They gonna hit him. I know it."

Minutes later the girls gang up on him, while other straphangers look on. Joined by at least one male teenager, they appear to viciously beat the man.

The videotaped attack allegedly occurred last month and was posted on YouTube on Nov. 7 by Holmes, according to The Smoking Gun.

CBS 2 HD tried to get the story from Holmes on Wednesday night, but was told by the person who answered the door at her house she wasn't home.

The NYPD could not immediately confirm if the attack was real.

NYC Transit issued the following statement:

"If the incident did in fact happen, it is unfortunate as one instance of criminal activity in our system is one too many. As the NYPD will surely tell you, crime in the system is at historically low levels."

Guardian Angel Curtis Sliwa said this type of thing is par for the course these days.

"Whether it's virtual or it's real, it's just a sign of the times," Sliwa said. "Females go out there; give beat downs to people indiscriminately because they want to prove they're as macho, maniacal as their knuckleheaded peers who are male gang bangers."

NYC Transit says it is looking into the incident and it says if there is forensic evidence contained in the clip, they're confident the NYPD Transit Bureau will make an arrest.
