After 8 Years Apart, Dog Reunited With Owner

BALTIMORE (CBS) ― Hundreds of dogs go missing every year and are almost always never found.

But, after eight years and thousands of miles traveled one "Scruffy" pooch is back at home with his very happy owner.

It was eight years ago when Michelle Rogers let her purebred Yorkie known as "Scruffy," out for what seemed to be a routine run in the neighborhood.

"I let him outside and he disappeared," said Rogers. "We put out flyers that night and we went to the pound," she added, but Scruffy was gone -- she thought forever.

"I thought about him. I always wondered where he was or what happened to him," said Rogers. "I kind of assumed that he got found by a family."

Somehow Scruffy wound up in Texas, where pound workers say they think he had a family for a while before he was found wandering the streets of Dallas.

Luckily for Scruffy and Rogers, the dog was tagged years ago with a small microchip identifier. When animal caretakers scanned him in Dallas, Rogers' name and number popped up.

Officials think Scruffy may have been stolen and sold when he disappeared years ago.

Now, he is back at home, where he is older, wiser, more traveled, and well-loved. Animal caretakers credit this happy-ending story to the microchip identifier that was put in Scruffy years ago.

They recommend all pet owners use the painless procedure to help find their beloved pets in case of an unexpected separation like that of Rogers and her canine Scruffy.
