Waterspouts Forming Off Miami Coast Caught On Tape

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (CBS) ― There was quite a sight off the coast of Fort Lauderdale and Hallandale Beach Wednesday morning. Several ominous looking waterspouts formed over the ocean, churning up the water but never reaching land, CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami reports.

The first one was spotted by pilots about 9 miles southeast of Fort Lauderdale International Airport, according to the National Weather Service and it remained nearly stationary until it dissipated.

A second waterspout was spotted about 10 miles southeast of downtown Fort Lauderdale and yet another formed off Hallandale Beach.

A special marine warning was issued until 10:45 a.m.

Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. According to the National Weather Service, the best course of evasive action if threatened by a waterspout is to move at a 90 degree angle from its apparent movement. Seek safe harbor immediately.
