Conn. Judge Weighs Release Of Church Documents

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) ― A Connecticut judge has heard arguments on when Bridgeport's Roman Catholic Diocese must release thousands of documents connected to sexual abuse lawsuits.

Waterbury Superior Court Judge Barry Stevens but did not immediately issue a ruling after Monday's hearing.

An attorney for media outlets seeking the documents urged Stevens to order the release quickly. The diocese requested time to review the files, saying confidential items must be removed.

The files consist of more than 12,000 pages from 23 lawsuits against six priests settled by the diocese in 2001. The U.S. Supreme Court last week refused to hear the diocese's appeal of a Connecticut Supreme Court decision ordering release of the documents.
