NJ Officer Pleads Not Guilty In Alleged Beating

PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) ― A New Jersey police officer indicted on charges of aggravated assault and official misconduct after a surveillance video showed him hitting an unarmed man has pleaded not guilty.

Passaic Officer Joseph Rios III entered his plea Monday in state Superior Court in Paterson. Bail was set at $10,000. Judge Donald J. Volkert Jr. gave him two weeks to raise it, allowing him to remain free.

Rios and his partner, who has not been criminally charged, are suspended without pay.

Video of the May 29 incident shows Rios flinging 50-year-old Ronnie Holloway to the ground at a Passaic intersection and hitting him.

Rios' attorney, Anthony Iacullo (eye-uh-COOL'-oh), has said his client acted properly, doing what he was trained to do in the situation.
