Defense: Govt Witnesses Willing To Lie About Gotti
NEW YORK (AP) ―
A defense lawyer says the government's turncoat witnesses were willing to tell lies about John "Junior" Gotti to reduce their own prison sentences.
Gotti's lawyer, Charles Carnesi, was scheduled to continue his closing arguments Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.
It's Gotti's fourth racketeering trial in as many years.
On Monday, Assistant U.S. Attorney James Trezevant (TREHZ'-uh-vant) said jurors shouldn't believe the defense claim that Gotti quit organized crime more than a decade ago.
Gotti's father, also named John, was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of racketeering in 1991. The former Gambino boss died there in 2002.
