Faithful and loyal fans of the New York Yankees sacrificed sleep and warmth for the hottest ticket in town. As tickets went on sale this morning, some people vowed to pay almost any price in hopes of witnessing an historic Yankee World Series victory against the Phillies in the new stadium.
"I'm still going to be able to pay my rent. I'm still going to be able to pay my light bill. Still going to be able to pay my phone bill. I save for this. I plan for this. This is a treat to myself," one fan said.
"It's a real special thing to really christen, as you will, the new ball park. And as they said, even through some of the post season, some of the ghosts have come over from the old building to here, so it makes it that much more special," said Yankee fan Chris Jarmuz.
Some loyal New York supporters lost a lot of sleep for a chance to catch Game 6. Many camped out for two days outside the stadium ticket office, some willing to pay about any price.
"Beautiful. Loving it. Cold night, but we bundled up. We're out here. We're taking this tonight," one fan said.
Renee Belzile was in line to buy tickets for her son. "I might tell you a figure now and then when I'm caught in the moment, what's money right? The Yankees."
In the end, bleacher seats were being sold, starting at less than $100 a piece - a small price to pay for an historic night at the new Yankee Stadium.
Asked if it was worth the wait, Richie Chelewsky said, "Yeah I hope so. We just got to win tonight."
"I'm feeling good now. Actually I'm feeling pretty good because they gave em out this early in the day. When I was here for first game they gave em out at 2:35 in the afternoon, and I was here for three days before that," one fan said.
"Oh yeah this is nothing. I was in 1996 38 hours and it was 10,000 people behind me, but I was number one then. I was number four or five today, but that don't make no difference. I got my ticket," said Bill Pee Wee Scheitd.
However, the ticket office shut down after selling tickets to only about a couple dozen people. Hundreds of fans like Will D'Ariano, who spent the night in line, were devastated.
"It was a very cold, frosty night, and I got shut out," he said. "They made us wait here all day for nothing. They opened up the door, sold like eight tickets and now they saying they ain't got no more tickets."
Lucky for D'Ariano, he had a surprise pinch runner: his dad. William D'Ariano ran up behind his son, chanting "Who's your daddy? Who's your daddy?" and said, "These are your tickets. I got them."
Will's response? "Now it was well worth it. The best dad always comes through."
"Nothing comes to you on a silver platter," the elder D'Ariano said, "but Game 6 will. On a silver platter to the World Series, and we're going."
